My dog goes absolutely bonkers when anyone comes to the front door - jumping, submissive urination, whining, crying, barking. All attempts to get them to sit and stay are lost in the frantic rush to see who's at the door.

If I could figure out what the excitement is all about, I might be able to handle the problem.

Try to determine if its the people or the some other stimulus. If you have two entry points try to have someone knock at the door then have someone else enter through the alternate door. If the dog does not get excited about the guest then you know it has to do with the door. If that is the case you can try desensitising him/her. Maybe by ringing a bell when a reward is given. Then attach the bell to the door. Door opens, bell rings, dog is happy. No promises but its a start. Also make sure guests ignore the dog until he/she settles down, you don't want to reward bad behavior.
